OpenAI, the world’s third-most valuable startup, has recently launched the GPT Store, a revolutionary marketplace for AI applications that aims to transform access to AI bots. The GPT Store operates similarly to popular mobile application stores or marketplaces, providing a platform for users to discover and access a variety of AI applications similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
With the introduction of GPTs (Generative Pre-trained Transformers) in November, users gained the ability to create customized versions of ChatGPT tailored to their specific needs and preferences. Now, with the launch of the GPT Store, OpenAI is making the most useful and popular versions of ChatGPT easily discoverable in one centralized place.
The store includes a range of AI applications, including those developed by the ChatGPT team as well as third-party bots. Users can find bots that generate personalized hiking trails, serve as AI assistants for academic researchers, facilitate coding tutoring, offer mathematics or science guidance, and even assist with tattoo design.
Creating and sharing bots on the GPT Store is open to any GPT creator. To make a customized version of ChatGPT available on the store, creators simply save their model for ‘everyone’ and have their builder profile verified. However, the GPTs must adhere to OpenAI’s latest usage policies and brand guidelines and undergo a review process to ensure compliance with safety measures.
The launch of the GPT Store also introduces the potential for monetization. Builders who create and publish GPTs on the store will have the opportunity to earn revenue based on the level of usage and engagement with their models. OpenAI plans to implement a revenue program in the first quarter of the upcoming fiscal year and will release specific criteria for payments soon, initially offering payment opportunities to builders in the United States.
Initially, the GPT Store will be accessible to paid users of ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Enterprise. ChatGPT Team plan members will have access to a private section of the store where they can securely publish GPTs to their workspaces. Furthermore, Enterprise customers will soon have access to the store, along with additional administrative controls for internal GPT sharing and external GPT usage for their businesses.
The launch of the GPT Store marks OpenAI’s transition from solely providing generative AI models to becoming a platform that hosts and facilitates the distribution of these models.
