Sam Altman Dismisses GPT-5 Training Speculation

Date:

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently squashed rumors that the company is currently training a fifth version of its popular Generative Pretrained Transformer (GPT) technology. During an MIT event, he clarified that OpenAI is instead focusing on further improving the capabilities of its current GPT-4 model.

This was in response to an open letter that called for the AI development community to pause working on models larger than GPT-4 for six months. According to Altman, the letter lacked essential technical detail and the claim that OpenAI was training GPT-5 was “kind of stupid”.

While Altman said he agreed with the general contents of the letter concerning safety and having models’ actions move in line with human values, it’s apparent that OpenAI is taking a different approach, looking to strengthen its current technology rather than adding to it.

In contrast to the sophisticated GPT-4 technology, Reddit has been inundated with comments generated from ChatGPT, uploaded by numerous bot accounts. Moderators have had a tough time keeping up with the relentless spam, with many subreddits such as r/AskWomen, r/AskEconomics and r/AskPhilosophy unable to keep up. Reddit has gone as far as to ban hundreds of bot accounts, but the spam just continues to increase with bots mostly used for advertising shady items such as illegal narcotics and other types of unverified merchandise.
