Volkswagen has announced at CES 2024 that it will be integrating ChatGPT into the voice-recognition systems of its future vehicles. This move is expected to enhance functionality and provide an improved experience compared to standard voice recognition. The integration of ChatGPT is scheduled to be available in the second quarter of 2024 and is likely to be introduced in the United States.
To integrate ChatGPT, Volkswagen will use Cerence Chat Pro. This integration will enable drivers to access the chatbot seamlessly without the need for separate activation, creating a new account, or installing a separate app. The voice recognition system will continue to operate as it currently does in Volkswagen models, where it is used for climate control, infotainment, and navigation functions. With the integration of ChatGPT, the voice recognition system will now have the capability to answer general knowledge questions using information sourced from ChatGPT. It’s important to note that ChatGPT will not have access to vehicle data, and the questions and answers will be immediately deleted, according to Volkswagen.
Volkswagen plans to introduce ChatGPT on various models, including the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, and ID.7 electric vehicles, as well as updated versions of the Golf, Passat, and Tiguan. The ID.4 is already available in the United States, while the ID.7 is expected to be launched later this year. Although the other two ID models were not initially intended for the U.S. market, they may also receive ChatGPT. The Passat is no longer sold in the U.S., but an updated version of the Tiguan is anticipated to be released later this year. It is likely that the GTI and Golf R performance versions of the Golf will also be equipped with ChatGPT in the U.S.
While Volkswagen claims to be the first volume manufacturer to offer ChatGPT as a standard feature, Mercedes-Benz previously announced that it would also bring ChatGPT voice control to its cars. However, Volkswagen argues that it is pushing the boundaries by making this technology accessible to a wider range of car buyers, not just luxury vehicle owners.
Kai Grünitz, VW board member for technical development, stated, Volkswagen has always democratized technology and made it accessible to the many. This also underlines the innovative strength of our new products.
In conclusion, Volkswagen’s integration of ChatGPT into its voice-recognition systems is set to elevate the functionality and user experience in its future vehicles. By integrating ChatGPT through Cerence Chat Pro, drivers will have access to a chatbot without the need for additional activations or separate installations. VW plans to roll out this feature on several models, including electric vehicles and updated versions of popular models. While Volkswagen is not the first automaker to offer ChatGPT, it aims to make this advanced technology available to a broader audience, aligning with its commitment to democratizing innovative technology.
