Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has created a new company in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI) that may be a potential competitor to OpenAI. The new firm is called X.AI and the move was registered in March, in the U.S. state of Nevada. Elon Musk has been named the firm’s director and is said to have brought together experts in the AI field. Reports have also included that investors related to SpaceX and Tesla have also been exploring various funding options.
X.AI features the trademark ‘X’ brand of Elon Musk. Not only that, his Twitter account reportedly bought thousands of graphic processing units (GPUs), crucial elements in powering AI-related software. The factor suggests the how strongly Elon Musk is committed to the venture.
It is widely rumoured that X.AI could rival OpenAI, the ChatGPT-maker. However, X.AI is not the first experience of Elon Musk in the field. He co-founded OpenAI in 2015, however, he left the company soon afterwards. He has since been vocal about his disapproval of OpenAI’s activities and its funding methods. He even signed an open letter in 2020 which called for a temporary halt on testing powerful AI systems.
It is evident that Elon Musk is uncertain and stressed about the potential perilthat AI could pose. He has made it his mission to explore the field and create something revolutionary. Despite his own delays and missteps, it appears that X.AI may be the next leap forward for AI technology. We shall have to wait and see how this newfound development affects AI technology, and the tech industry as a whole.
