India recently showcased its technological and economic strength at the G20 Summit, highlighting the fusion of traditional knowledge and modern technology. Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, emphasized that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government has established a strong connection between traditional knowledge and cutting-edge technology.
Singh noted that India has made significant progress in integrating traditional knowledge through initiatives such as the Tradition Under Primal Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL). He also highlighted the fusion of modern scientific acumen, technology, and architecture with the country’s rich heritage, exemplified by monuments like the Bharat Mandapam.
The minister further emphasized the government’s commitment to transition from traditional approaches, mentioning the Anusandhan National Research Foundation, which will receive up to 70% funding from non-governmental sources. This transition aims to promote innovation and strengthen research efforts in the country.
In line with this commitment, Singh proposed the observance of a ‘One Month One Theme’ program to integrate the efforts of various research laboratories under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). He explained that while each laboratory has its unique strengths, there are common themes that can be explored for wider integration in the future.
Singh highlighted the importance of integrating the scientific community with society, emphasizing the ‘One Week One Lab’ (OWOL) program’s role in showcasing the relevance of research to the public. He encouraged CSIR laboratories to share success stories and reach out to potential beneficiaries to ensure that their work serves the public good.
The G20 Summit held in New Delhi resulted in several significant outcomes. The New Delhi Declaration affirmed India’s commitment to initiatives like the ‘Lifestyle for Environment Mission’ (LiFE) and the promotion of Artificial Intelligence for achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
Additionally, the G20 Summit supported India’s plan to establish a Global Digital Public Infrastructure Repository (GDPIR) and welcomed the establishment of the Global Initiative on Digital Health (GIDH) under the World Health Organization’s management.
One notable achievement during the summit was the launch of the Global Biofuel Alliance (GBA), a collaborative platform initiated by PM Modi and supported by several world leaders. The GBA aims to promote biofuels globally and contribute to sustainable and green growth.
