India Declines to Regulate Artificial Intelligence

Date:

India has decided to forego the regulation on Artificial Intelligence (AI), with the Ministry of Electronics and IT calling it a “significant and strategic” sector for the nation. This has come at a time when global voices stand for increased overview of the quickly evolving technology.

The central government has asserted that, besides formulating the necessary policies and infrastructural arrangements, it is not intended to introduce legislations to govern the AI growth. It is said that the boom of AI has a kinetic impact on entrepreneurship and economic advancement in the country. The ministry mentioned that, because of AI, more reliable and interactive citizen-centric services can be offered through digital platforms.

Because of its great potential, attention has been pouring in towards AI from America and other developed markets. However, the increasing number of startups in India related to AI has been limited so far. India extending support through strategic initiatives could be essential for drawing the talented people in the aforementioned field.

In recent weeks, a total of 1,100 global tech innovators and academics including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak have signed a letter, requesting to pause the artificial intelligence (AI) technology training for a period of 6 months. Italy additionally prohibited the OpenAI ChatGPT implementation because of the violation of European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

There are talks among some U.S. lawmakers about AI, but India’s current attitude may seriously impact the largest virtual marketplace in the world. Therefore, it is not just a decision limited to India, but also significant to the rest of the globe.
