London-based startup Synthesia has raised $90m at a unicorn valuation of $1bn. The generative AI firm creates virtual avatars with realistic voices, based on text and voice recordings. The funding round was led by Accel, with participation from NVentures, the venture capital arm of NVIDIA. Synthesia plans to use the funds to increase headcount from just over 200 to around 250. The company also intends to continue AI research efforts to improve the product further. Synthesia’s previous round of funding was $50m in December 2021. Founder and CEO Victor Riparbelli said the unicorn valuation was based on strong user growth and business fundamentals.
