Malaysia’s Higher Education Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, has stated that the use of artificial intelligence (AI)-driven ChatGPT in Malaysia will not be blocked, but it must adhere to set guidelines. These guidelines have been issued and distributed to local universities across the country. The guidelines will ensure that the use of ChatGPT is compliant and that there is a clear distinction between situations where it is appropriate for use and situations where it is not. Khaled notes that the use of ChatGPT is unavoidable in today’s age, but there must be a line drawn on what and where it would be suitable for usage. In a recent case in the US, things went wrong after ChatGPT was used, with two lawyers mistakenly including fictitious legal research in a court filing. Khaled says that adopting AI technologies would be beneficial if they were used as tools for the learning process.
