Lack of Trust Hindering AI Progress in Medical Settings: GE Healthcare Report

Date:

A recent survey from GE Healthcare has highlighted growing distrust around the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in medical settings. The Reimagining Better Health poll of 5,500 patients and patient advocates and 2,000 clinicians found that the benefits of AI in healthcare are understood, with 61% of clinicians agreeing that the technology can assist in decision-making. However, 55% of respondents said that AI was not ready for use in medicine and 58% expressed a lack of trust in AI data. The main reason for lack of trust is the potential for algorithms to produce discriminatory results due to biased data. The study also found that only 55% of surveyed clinicians feel they receive sufficient training on how to use medical technology. Clinicians need a better understanding of how AI works and how it can augment their work, the survey suggests. As healthcare systems face pressures, AI-driven systems could help eliminate administrative tasks, freeing up clinicians to focus on patient care.
