Apple Bans Internal Use of ChatGPT-Like Technology Due to Fears of Data Leakage

Date:

Apple has recently made news for their internal ban on ChatGPT-like technology and plans for its own Large Language Model (LLM). These tools, while incredibly popular lately, are unpredictable and can result in user data leakages. This prompted Apple to take precautionary measures by prohibiting its employees from using such technology.

According to The Wall Street Journal, a leaked internal Apple document revealed details on the technology ban. Reports from anonymous sources indicate that Apple is set to start work on its own version of an LLM. Other companies, like Amazon and Verizon, have also restricted usage of these tools.

LLMs are based on access to immense data stores and rely on learning patterns from user behavior. Even with certain settings configured to prevent conversation logging, issues still arise with the tool.

Fortunately, the ChatGPT application is now available in the App Store, but users should proceed with caution about any Imitation Apps that are trying to scam customers.

Apple has become quite familiar with machine learning technology – with Siri being launched in 2011, and advances in computational photography with the iPhone – the next logical step would be LLMs. While the term “Artificial Intelligence” tends to be overused, it is still a valuable tool and Apple is making sure to keep their data safe.

Apple has taken all the right precautions, however, as The Wall Street Journal has reported, the issue still involves human elements. It is very likely that Apple will introduce their own version of LLM, but don’t expect this anytime soon. Reports suggest a potential reveal of the project at WWDC in June, but with the advancement of the technology, Apple will need time to ensure their version is fully matured before any kind of public release.
