Zoom Partners with Okta to Enhance Videoconference Security with Zero-Trust Policies

Date:

Zoom and Okta are two online services that have seen explosive growth in recent months, thanks to the pandemic. Zoom, a video conferencing platform, has seen its user base balloon to nearly 300 million, while Okta is an identity and access management platform that provides secure authentication to applications and devices. Today, Okta and Zoom announced an integration whereby cybersecurity administrators will be able to centrally manage encryption across the Zoom platform, thanks to the Okta Authentication for End-to-End Encryption (E2EE).

With Okta Authentication, end-to-end encryption can be enforced organization-wide, allowing each attendee’s identity to be verified via email. This ensures compliance with zero-trust policies, and helps to prevent Zoom bombing, where unwanted individuals can guess the invitation link and enter the Zoom call. Administrators can enable the same using the security tab of the Zoom web portal. Users can then turn on the E2EE manually, or be redirected to an Okta web page to verify their credentials. Immediately, a blue shield with a lock will appear next to the attendee’s name. Hovering over the icon gives attendees information about their identity, such as the domain and verified email address.

Chris Niggel, Chief Security Officer at Okta, notes the importance of using the authentication platform to thwart any upcoming assaults using generative artificial intelligence (AI) platforms such as ChatGPT. By reducing the friction in conjunction with providing users with seamless workflows, organisations can move closer to enacting zero-trust policies, while allowing freedom to organisations to work at their own pace and find their own way.
