Zhihu Launches AI Model Rival To GPT-4, Joining The Giant Tech Companies In AI Competition

Date:

Zhihu, the Chinese online content website most often compared with Quora, has launched a new large language model, Zhihaitu AI, to join the race of the artificial intelligence (AI) race that is heating up despite increasing regulation. Co-developed with Model Best, a Beijing based startup dedicated to AI models, the model is as powerful as OpenAI’s version of the AI model, GPT-4.

The internal testing of the model will be centered on Zhihu’s Hot List and its purpose is to fetch, organize and aggregate useful content for users in order to answer their questions promptly. Furthermore, the model is trained by Model Best’s CPM-Bee model and is deemed better than any other language models available to process Chinese language, according to Li Dahai, partner and CTO at Zhihu. All founding members of the model were said to come from the Natural Language Processing and Computational Social Science Lab, Tsinghua University.

Recently, three Chinese tech giants have intensified the AI race by integrating their own language models into their various services. Alibaba released Tongyi Qianwen as part of their DingTalk and Tmall Genie platforms. ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, unveiled My AI, an intelligent assistant designed to help users with automatic summary of meeting minutes and creating reports, as well as with improving written text and completing the unfinished writing. In the meantime, SenseTime debuted a ChatGPT-like chatbot, named SenseChat, that is powered by their SenseNova AI model.

The Chinese Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) recently proposed regulations on AI-based generative contents and services which are geared towards providing more accurate content and protecting individual users’ data. The regulation also puts the responsibility on AI providers to steer clear from generating false information.

Zhihu is no stranger to the tech industry. Founded in 2010 by Zhou Yuan, the Beijing based company has quickly made a name for itself as one of the top content providers in China. With his commitment to web education and the new model, Zhihu is hoping it can become an industry leader in the language model category and further expand its reach in the AI world.
