X’s Grok Launches As Rival To OpenAI ChatGPT, Google Bard
X has introduced its new chatbot Grok to Premium+ subscribers, aiming to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. Grok incorporates real-time data from X into its responses to queries, providing users with up-to-date information. The artificial intelligence venture xAI, founded by Elon Musk in July 2023, developed Grok initially available in the United States, with plans for a global launch in the near future.
Initial access to Grok is limited to select Premium+ subscribers in the U.S., with priority given to long-term subscribers during the rollout phase. However, X has stated that all users will have access to Grok by the end of next week. Grok can be easily accessed through the side menu on X’s website, as well as on iOS and Android devices.
As a conversational chatbot, Grok utilizes real-time data from X’s platform, enhancing the quality of its responses. By pulling from real-time news and information sourced from X posts, Grok delivers responses similar to those produced by OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Bard, and Anthropic’s Claude. The chatbot was trained on data from the web until Q3 2023, in addition to feedback from human assistants. Grok is powered by a large language model (LLM) called Grok-1.
Although Grok provides users with responses based on recent headlines and real-time information, it remains uncertain how the chatbot selects content or the frequency at which it may produce inaccurate answers. The potential for misinformation and false responses has raised questions about Grok’s reliability and accuracy.
Bindu Reddy, CEO of Abacus.AI, expressed her belief in the significance of real-time data, stating, People are vastly underestimating the power of real-time data. Reddy shared a post by Robert Scoble, an AI engineer and tech evangelist, which compared the responses from Grok and Bard for the same query. Grok’s response highlighted events of the day, such as the launch of Google Gemini and Alibaba’s video AI scraping TikTok data. In contrast, Bard’s answer focused on the summary of IBM Quantum advances and Android’s AI developments.
Twitter, now known as X, was initially built on the promise of delivering real-time information and integrating it into search results. It was Google that first tapped into Twitter results and incorporated them into mobile in early 2015. X’s development of Grok aligns with its vision of providing users with instant access to the latest information and news.
In summary, X’s Grok is set to challenge existing chatbot technologies by incorporating real-time data from X’s platform into responses to user queries. With an initial rollout to Premium+ subscribers in the U.S., Grok aims to compete with the likes of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. As more users gain access to Grok, the chatbot’s ability to provide accurate and reliable responses will be closely scrutinized.
