Writing Stories with ChatGPT for my 5-Year-Old: Fun, Innovative and Stress-Free Bedtime

Date:

Bedtime is one of the most challenging and stressful parts of the day for parents with young children. Trying to entertain and capture the attention of a child daily with a new, creative and innovative story can be hard. My family and I have been telling stories to our five-year-old son since he was just 3-month’s-old. We have graduatted from simple bedtime stories to constructing entire stories around characters introduced by our son.

Our routine consists of stories that varies between “The Gruffalo”, “Peppa Pig”,”Jack and the Beanstalk”, “Elmer the Patchwork Elephant”, and “Cave Baby”. We have truly been stumped and stressed out to come up with creative plots daily. And then we discovered ChatGPT.

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot created to help you write stories and run conversations. We were more than excited to try it, as it could potentially reduce our burden and even make bedtime fun for our son.

It all began when our son mandated a story involving Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader and himself. After inputting the prompt in ChatGPT, a story was generated within seconds. The expressions of amazement and joy on his face was priceless. We could not believe how well this AI chatbot could build a story with so few inputs.

We found more success when our prompt included more detail, such as the plot, setting, and characters. It created even more visuals in the stories, giving them an extra layer of color and detail that our son loved.

Now, the difficulty is learning to limit our bedtime adventures to one, brief story per night. Keeping encouraging our son to keep on smiling and dreaming, while still paying respect to the age-old paperback. With ChatGPT’s help, we have made bedtime much less of a stressor and more of a creative adventure.
