In the late 19th century, about 80 women worked as computers at the Harvard Observatory, cataloging and analyzing extensive astronomical data. These women played a crucial role in advancing the field of astronomy even though they were often paid less than men or worked as volunteers.

Throughout the World Wars, women were hired to calculate artillery trajectories and were encouraged to work as computers in the absence of men. Their contributions continued well into the 1960s when women played pivotal roles in early NASA space projects. Katherine Johnson, one of these remarkable women, was responsible for quality-checking the outputs of early IBM computers for an orbital mission in 1962.

Despite their significant contributions, many women in computing were not recognized or compensated accordingly. The gender pay gap persisted, with female computer specialists earning significantly less than their male counterparts. Today, computing and programming serve as the foundations of AI. The groundwork laid by women in computing during the 19th and 20th centuries enabled the development of AI systems that can analyze vast amounts of data and identify patterns.

In the present day, numerous women continue to make pioneering contributions to the AI industry. Leaders like Cassie Kozyrkov, Joy Buolamwini, and Mira Murati are pushing the boundaries of AI, making it safer, more accurate, accessible, inclusive, and reliable.

However, it is crucial to address the gender diversity gap in the industry. A study revealed that women make up only 12% of researchers published in leading AI conferences. This lack of gender diversity has tangible consequences, as biased AI systems have been found to reinforce harmful stereotypes and discriminate against women, particularly women with darker skin tones.

Rectifying this gender gap requires a holistic approach. Improvement in AI training datasets can help, but it is equally important to include women in the data-collection processes and dismantle biased patterns perpetuated in our society.

The recent omission of women from the list of AI pioneers should serve as a wake-up call to media and the industry as a whole. It is high time to break the status quo and create an environment that recognizes and appreciates the valuable contributions of women. By doing so, we can bridge the gender gap and harness the full potential of AI for the benefit of all.
