More and more women are choosing to pursue freelance work instead of traditional permanent employment due to the flexibility it provides, according to a recent report from Fiverr, the freelance-service marketplace. The report found that women are more likely than men to take up independent work because they value the flexibility it offers, prefer to work from home and want to avoid unpleasant or toxic work environments. The freelance market is growing, with 39% of the US workforce taking on freelance jobs in 2022, and searches across marketing, social media and consulting are trending on Fiverr this year. Fiverr’s survey found that despite economic uncertainty, the independent workforce saw a continued increase in revenue, with around 48% making more money from their independent work in 2022. Professional services, such as legal and consulting services, make up a significant portion of the independent professional workforce in the US, with women being more likely to provide professional and creative services, but less likely to provide technical services. Fiverr has seen an exponential increase in supply and demand for AI services, and hopes that women will take hold of this opportunity and begin cultivating AI skills and businesses around AI services. Despite the benefits of freelance work, Amon noted the top three roadblocks women run into when starting companies are inequitable access, opportunity and compensation.
