A 34-year-old widow residing in Kashimira fell victim to a sophisticated scam orchestrated by a couple residing in her building. Rashmi Kar (37) and her husband, Deepanjal Vishwas, duped the unsuspecting woman of ₹6.60 lakh using an artificial intelligence (AI) voice tool.
The scam began when Rashmi promised the victim a job with a lucrative annual package of Rs 43 lakh. She provided a mobile number, claiming it belonged to her colleague, Abhimanyu Mehra, who would assist with the recruitment process. The victim contacted Mehra, who gained her trust and convinced her to transfer the money to secure the job.
However, as the victim began questioning the status of the recruitment and requested a meeting, Mehra made excuses and avoided direct contact. Suspecting foul play, the victim approached the Kashigaon police station.
Investigations revealed that Rashmi had been using an AI tool to imitate Mehra’s voice and deceive the victim. She used a fake SIM card to make the calls and maintain anonymity. Rashmi has been arrested and charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, while her husband remains at large.
The authorities are conducting further investigations into the case to apprehend Deepanjal Vishwas and ensure justice for the victim. This incident serves as a cautionary tale against falling prey to such sophisticated scams and highlights the importance of vigilance in financial transactions.
