Why Siri is Not Ready for ChatGPT Features Yet

Date:

If you’ve had the chance to use ChatGPT, you may have asked yourself, “wouldn’t this be perfect as a voice assistant?” You wouldn’t be alone in thinking this. In the AI chatbot race, Google has shifted its Google Assistant team towards Google Bard and Microsoft has implemented Bing with ChatGPT. Even though Apple has been left behind in this race, we may have a better idea now as to why.

The Information published a report outlining that Apple is struggling to adapt to the changing landscape of technology. While competitors have implemented AI-infused technology, Apple has been committing to an almost opposite approach with Siri. This could mean that we won’t be expecting AI-driven features from Siri anytime soon.

The report discloses that most of Siri’s responses are written and editeHe by humans to protect Apple’s image-brand and to avoid any embarrassing errors made by AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Google Bard, and Bing with ChatGPT. Apple’s brand image and its user’s privacy has taken priority over the advancement of its AI program. This concept was further enforced after one incident when a Guardian report exposed that Apple contractors were listening to user’s recordings without consent.

Likewise, when an Indiana boy asked Siri if he could “shoot up a school”, Siri unfortunately gave him directions to nearby schools. Apple implemented an immediate resolution for this issue, which proved that Apple will inevitably protect its image at all costs.

However, it looks like change may be coming soon for Siri. Apple’s engineers are reportedly working on numerous upgrades based on the usage of large language models that power AI chatbots like ChatGPT with the hope that the improved Siri will be prepared for an upcoming version of iOS.
