Why Is Elon Musk Launching a ChatGPT-like Entity?

Date:

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has been linked with a project to launch an AI company that could potentially rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology. According to Friday’s release of Nevada state business filing documents, Musk’s name appears as the director of the newly established X.AI Corporation.

The co-founder and outspoken critic of OpenAI took action to create the corporation on March 9th, prior to the open letter made by Musk and the Future of Life Institute advocating for a six-month pause on the development of powerful AI systems. It appears that the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and Twitter is taking steps to realize his AI ambitions through X.AI Corporation.

In terms of Musk’s larger goals, the AI company could play a major part in fulfilling his plans of creating a “superapp” or “everything app” labeled X. This desire to create X is made clear in the recent consolidation of Twitter into X Corp. Furthermore, it appears that Musk has been discussing co-financing the startup with investors at Tesla and SpaceX. The billionaire has recently acquired thousands of processors from NVIDIA for the project, too.

The project for X.AI Corporation comes despite Musk’s earlier involvement in penning the open letter mentioned previously. The letter calls for developers to pause the production of powerful AI systems. Additionally, the project is noteworthy due to Musk’s past involvement in the creation of OpenAI, on which he served as co-chair until 2018. Since then, he has been vocal in his criticism of the organization, mainly due to the creation of a for-profit arm and its partnership with Microsoft.

X.AI Corporation was founded by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk. The company comes as part of Tesla, SpaceX, and Twitter CEO’s goal to create an AI-based “superapp” titled X. While the organization is still in its early stages, the takeover of development of powerful AI systems by developers and the partnership between Musk’s former organization OpenAI and Microsoft are all potential markers of what’s to come.
