OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman has revealed that scaling issues and GPU limitations are impeding the progress of the firm’s research and delaying the release of GPT-5. Altman made the admission in an interview with Humanloop, highlighting that when GPT-5 does arrive, it will not represent a huge leap forward since it will likely be only double or triple in size over GPT-4. Meanwhile, the focus is still on optimising GPT-4 and making it cheaper and faster. Multimodality, one of the most exciting features of GPT-4, also won’t be available until 2024, according to Altman.
OpenAI is an artificial intelligence research laboratory consisting of the for-profit corporation OpenAI LP and its parent company, the non-profit OpenAI Inc. The lab is dedicated to advancing AI in a way that promotes human welfare. Founded in December 2015 by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, and others, OpenAI was established as an alternative to for-profit AI research labs, which are primarily funded and driven by commercial interests.
Sam Altman is the CEO of OpenAI. As well as overseeing the company’s research and development projects, he is also a prominent figure in Silicon Valley and an advocate for entrepreneurship and universal basic income. Altman previously founded and served as CEO of Loopt, a location-based social networking app that was acquired by Green Dot Corporation in 2012.
