In an interview with Futurism, Blake Lemoine, an ex-Google engineer and former member of the company’s Artificial Intelligence team, reveals that Google Bard was developed in mid 2021. Although it wasn’t called Bard then, Google was actively exploring whether it should be released or not. Eventually, it was planned to launch in the fall of 2022, which was around the same time as OpenAI’s ChatGPT. According to Lemoine, the delay of the chatbot launch was partially brought on by questions around safety and the potential risk of its output containing racial or gender biases.
In addition to that, Lemoine mentions that Google has more advanced technology in its possession that has yet to be released. He proceeded to speak about the sophistication of the system he worked on which incorporated various features such as images, sounds, and access to Google Books API. As stated by him, the system was able to understand all of the API backends available to it.
