Why Applying to Fast Food Jobs with Chatbots and Automated Processes is Nearly Impossible?

Date:

Fast food companies are struggling to attract employees, and it’s not just because of low wages. In fact, artificial intelligence (AI) may also be part of the problem. Reporter Hillary Hoffower recently looked into the hiring process at several fast-food restaurants, including McDonald’s and Wendy’s. At McDonald’s, Hoffower answered chatbot Olivia’s questions, which were mostly routine screening questions. But when it was time to schedule an interview, Olivia didn’t follow through. Hoffower eventually received a generic email address to apply through. At Wendy’s, the chatbot didn’t communicate her availability to the hiring manager. Meanwhile, at Hardee’s, the AI system scheduled an interview for a Friday afternoon but then Hoffower received an automated reminder and was given the option to reschedule. She chose Memorial Day and was given an open availability to schedule an interview, but the manager wasn’t there. Hoffower eventually decided to not pursue that application any further. For Hoffower, the only successful application process that led to an in-person interview and eventual hire was Waffle House, where there was human interaction during the application process and scheduling.
