This Thursday, US Vice President Kamala Harris and top administration officials are set to meet with CEOs from some of the leading technology companies in a discussion about the responsible development of artificial intelligence (AI) in the US. Invited to this White House event are Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google; Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft; Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI; and Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic.
The point of this meeting is for a “frank discussion” about the risks associated with continue growth of AI, as President Joe Biden expressed that tech companies need to make sure their products are safe before making them available to the public. Other top administration officials in attendance of the meeting will be Chief of Staff Jeff Zients, Chief of Staff Deputy Bruce Reed, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, National Economic Council Director Lael Brainard, and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.
Anthropic has confirmed their participation in the meeting, while Google, Microsoft and OpenAI have yet to confirm or comment on the situation yet. The meeting shares the same discussion that many are having about the rise of generative AI, not only nationally, but internationally: the industry and the government are struggling with the implications of the technology on employment, media, and geopolitics.
In response to these concerns, the Biden administration released a public request for information to investigate businesses regarding their usage of automated tools in the workplace, such as monitoring and evaluation of workers. This investigation is an attempt to examine the economic, safety, physical, mental, and emotional implications of such technology, with the goal of creating an economy that supports high paying jobs, where workers are respected and treated with dignity.
The company Anthropic focuses on commercializing artificial intelligence technology and increasing transparency in the use of autonomous solutions. Founded in 2019 and based in California, Anthropic works to optimize clients’ AI investments with an integrated platform and offers enterprise AI solutions including team and practitioner enablement, assessment, and governance.
Dario Amodei, who will be in attendance at this White House meeting, is the CEO and co-founder of Anthropic. Amodei was previously a researcher in the AI lab of OpenAI and a staff research scientist at Google Brain. He has also been a professor of Computer Science at the University of California, Irvine and the University of Stanford. Amodei has an impressive background and strong presence in the AI industry and is an authority on ML and AI for the enterprise.
