What Is ChatGPT? An Introduction and Overview

Date:

ChatGPT has become one of the most talked-about AI chatbots since its release in 2022. The San Francisco-based OpenAI lab created ChatGPT, a large language model (LLM) that uses transformer networks to generate human-like text, including audio, images, and even protein structures. Since its launch, ChatGPT has gathered 100 million users in just two months and become the fastest-growing app in history.

But this AI chatbot also comes with promises and concerns. Despite its helpful applications in designing websites, writing articles and emails, and developing software code, people have raised concerns about its possible use in facilitating misinformation, phishing scams, and cheating on tests.

Powered by deep neural networks, ChatGPT’s LLM structure works through next token prediction where the model uses a large corpus of text to predict the next token in the text sequence accurately. ChatGPT is different from other transformer-based LLMs as it has an additional training step called reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF). This step fine-tunes the model by having human reviewers and annotators crafting prompts and rating the LLM’s output.

The free version of ChatGPT has limited server capacity based on GPT-3.5, whereas the paid version ChatGPT Plus, priced at $20 per month, has customer support, priority responses, and is based on the more advanced GPT-4 model, which has a longer memory than its predecessor.

To make the most of ChatGPT, knowing its limitations is recommended. Third-party services provide access to the chatbot, such as Poe, which features several different chatbots.

ChatGPT has undoubtedly become a game-changer in the AI world, providing endless possibilities in content creation and generating human-like text. However, it’s crucial to understand its limits and use it ethically.
