What ChatGPT Gets Wrong About Newcastle

Date:

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence tool that has taken the world by storm. Recently, a poster on Facebook noticed that the AI made a confusing statement that Cullercoats, in North Tyneside had once been a home to shipyards which is definitely not true. In order to test the accuracy of the AI, two questions were asked – to give a brief history of Newcastle, and what the city generally is known for.

Surprisingly, most of the responses provided by ChatGPT were correct and gave an overall accurate description. To give an in-depth line-by-line review, ChatGPT started off by giving general facts about Newcastle-upon-Tyne, located in the north-east of England and including its 11th century inception. It also noted that King Henry II granted a charter to the city to hold markets and fairs by the 12th century which is true. Moreover, the city prospered in the 18th and 19th centuries, mainly due to the growth of the coal industry and expansion of the port. Furthermore, 20th century defeats due to the decline of the coal industry have only reinforced the city’s transformation into a cultural and tourist hotspot.

Some of the specific points ChatGPT made were that Newcastle is well known for its Geordie accent, and the few pubs that serve traditional Newcastle Brown Ale- days after being brewed in 1927. Moreover, Newcastle United Football Club has a passionate fan base and plays its home games at St James’ Park stadium. Additionally, the iconic Tyne Bridge and the enormous Angel of the North sculpture situated outside the city are noteworthy landmarks. Lastly, the Great North Run is an international half-marathon held in September that attracts a significant number of participants.

Despite a few minor inaccuracies in regards to the historical details, it is impressive considering the vast size of this city and its many complicated historic aspects. It is undeniable that ChatGPT is an incredibly clever system that is able to dig up correct information about various cities, as evidenced by its mostly accurate representation of Newcastle.

Apart from the AI itself, the article also mentioned a person and a company. The person mentioned is the anonymous poster on Facebook who discovered that ChatGPT had made the mistake regarding the shipyards in Tyneside. The company mentioned is Newcastle Brown Ale, which was brewed in the city of Newcastle since 1927. While not brewed in Newcastle any more, traditional Newcastle Brown Ale still serves as an iconic reminder of the city’s rich heritage.
