A recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center found that 58% of American adults are familiar with ChatGPT. Interestingly, those from higher income households with a postgraduate degree appear to be the most knowledgeable about the software. Only 14% of those surveyed said they had used the software for work, entertainment, or to learn something new.
OpenAI’s web-based ChatGPT has become a topic of discussion, as the bot has been able to generate conversational sentences that sound almost human-like. As a result, the tool has reignited an ongoing conversation regarding the regulation of AI, and many tech giants are trying to beat the tool at its own game.
The Pew Research Center surveyed more than 10,000 American adults to gain further insight into the people who know and use ChatGPT. The survey found that knowledge of the software increases with higher levels of education. Specifically, 80% of survey respondents with postgraduate degrees were familiar with the software, but the awareness decreased to 59% for those with some college education. Similarly, respondents with upper-income households were more knowledgeable of ChatGPT (76%) compared to those from lower-income households (45%).
In addition, the survey revealed how people are using the software. As mentioned, only 14% of total respondents said they used the software for work, entertainment, or to learn something new. Of this group, 20% from lower-income households used the software for work-related tasks as opposed to 11% from middle and upper-income households.
In terms of perceived utility, 33% of respondents found the software to be extremely or very useful. This usage ratio is slightly higher for younger users (under 50) at 38%, compared to those over 50 at 25%.
