Warren Buffett, the world-renowned investor, compared artificial intelligence (AI) to the creation of the atom bomb in his address at Berkshire Hathaway’s annual meeting. This has aroused concerns for the public about the rapid advances in the technology.
Expressing his doubt on the capacity of AI to replace humans, yet recognizing its extreme capability, Buffett said: “It can do all kinds of things. And when something can do all kinds of things, I get a little bit worried.” Buffett separately referred to Albert Einstein’s famous quotation about the splitting of the atom that “it changed everything save our modes of thinking.” The Sage of Omaha believes that AI is much more potent, since it has the capability to “change everything in the world, except how men think and behave.”
For decades, Buffett has expressed his worry about the catastrophic consequences of nuclear weapons. He has stated that he wishes to reduce the probability of nuclear attacks with the money he has earned. His worries of a potential pandemic and nuclear war are reinforced with his comparison between AI with the creation of the atom bomb.
Recently, Geoffrey Hinton has resigned from Google due to his fear of the excessive capabilities of AI technology. He told Reuters that he believes the threat posed by AI may be even more pressing than climate change.
