Voice Actors Union Negotiates AI Use in Productions

Date:

SAG-AFTRA recently approved new contracts specifically defining voice actors as humans, excluding artificial intelligence from the category. The updated rules state that producers must obtain legal consent from voice actors before using their name to create an AI-generated voice. If an AI is utilized to modify a voice actor’s performance in a foreign language, the actor will still be entitled to residuals based on the exhibition of the altered performance.

Moreover, producers are now required to inform the union and engage in negotiations if they opt for an AI-generated voice over a human voice actor in their production. The new contracts, lasting three years until June 30, 2026, received overwhelming support from 95.52% of SAG-AFTRA members. This decision marks a significant step in safeguarding the rights and interests of voice actors amidst the evolving landscape of technology and entertainment.
