Vietnam has shown significant progress in empowering women, according to UN officials. Legislation such as the Gender Equality Law and a 35% quota for female candidates in the National Assembly has paved the way for increased investments in women’s empowerment. As a result, Vietnam has climbed 11 places on the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index, now ranking 72nd out of 146 countries. The country boasts over a 70% female workforce participation rate and exceeds the global average for women’s representation in parliament.
Despite these advancements, women still face barriers to equal opportunities in education, employment, and leadership roles, particularly among ethnic communities and women with disabilities. Only a small percentage of female ethnic group members are part of party bodies and People’s Councils compared to their male counterparts. More efforts are needed at the commune level, where only 22% of women are involved in People’s Committees.
Increasing women’s leadership in both public and private institutions has proven beneficial, as evidenced by the success of businesses led by females during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there is still a disparity in the number of female business owners and CEOs in Vietnam. Addressing these inequalities and promoting women’s leadership at all levels is essential to combat bias, stereotypes, and build public trust.
Improving access to quality education and leadership training, especially in STEM fields, is crucial for successful digital transformation. Gender equality in STEM education can help prevent imbalances exacerbated by the digital revolution. Additionally, ensuring fair pay and gender-responsive social protection systems will support women’s economic empowerment.
Innovative financing solutions can lift women and girls out of poverty and unlock greater economic prosperity for the country. By investing in programs to end violence against women and promoting women’s inclusion and leadership in various sectors, Vietnam can accelerate progress towards gender equality.
This year’s theme for International Women’s Day, ‘Invest in women: Accelerate progress,’ emphasizes the importance of empowering and supporting women to drive societal advancement. By learning from the stories of women like Mi and Le Thi Ha Giang, we can envision a brighter future where women have equal opportunities to thrive and succeed.
