A US lawyer and his law firm have been fined for submitting fake citations in a court filing. Steven A. Schwartz, Peter LoDuca and law firm Levidow, Levidow & Oberman were issued a US$5,000 fine for acting in bad faith and making acts of conscious avoidance and false and misleading statements to the court. The lawyers involved had used an AI-powered chatbot called ChatGPT for research, but failed to fact-check if the sources cited were real. While there is nothing inherently improper about using artificial intelligence in legal work, lawyers must ensure their filings are accurate, according to Judge P. Kevin Castel.
