US law firm Levidow, Levidow & Oberman has been fined almost €4,600 for citing fabricated cases provided by AI language model ChatGPT, according to reports. The firm used the chatbot to cite previous similar lawsuits during a lawsuit against Colombian airline, Avianca. However, not only were details incorrect in some cases, but the chatbot had entirely fabricated instances in other parts, leading to accusations against the firm. While AI can be a helpful tool in legal work, lawyers have the responsibility to check the authenticity of the material submitted. It’s important to note that language models often invent information, which could lead to misleading legal decisions.
