Two US lawyers and their law firm have been fined $5,000 after fake court citations generated by a chatbot were submitted in a filing. The order, made by a district judge in Manhattan, found that Steven Schwartz and Peter LoDuca had used fictitious legal research in a case against Colombian airline Avianca. The lawyers failed to ensure the accuracy of their filings and submitted fake opinions even after their existence had been called into question. The judge said that while there was nothing inherently improper in using artificial intelligence to assist in legal work, lawyers had to ensure filings were accurate. Chatbots such as the one used by the lawyers are prone to inaccuracies and have been known to include hallucinations.
