Amid escalating tensions in the region, a group of US lawmakers and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang made separate visits to Taiwan following China’s recent military exercises near the island. The bipartisan delegation, led by Representative Michael McCaul, arrived in Taiwan to discuss various issues with President Lai Ching-te, including peace in the Indo-Pacific region and Taiwan-US trade relations.
The visit by the US delegation comes at a critical time, as the State Department has accused China of military provocations for conducting large-scale military drills near Taiwan. This move has raised concerns about stability in the region, especially following President Lai’s inauguration on May 20.
Apart from the lawmakers, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang also landed in Taipei, emphasizing the significant role that Taiwan plays in the global technology supply chain. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., based in Taiwan, is a key player in producing cutting-edge chips used by companies like Nvidia.
Huang’s visit underscores the importance of Taiwan in the tech industry, with Huang mentioning in a recent interview that Taiwan is at the epicentre of the world’s technology supply chain. As tensions continue to rise in the region, the visits by the US lawmakers and Nvidia CEO highlight the strategic importance of Taiwan in both political and technological realms.
