The US Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan has recently warned Congress representatives of the risks involved with modern AI technologies such as ChatGPT, stressing that these could “turbocharge” fraud. Khan referred to the numerous opportunities made possible by AI but recommended caution in the face of its potential for fraud. In February, the agency launched its own Office of Technology (OT) which was tasked with providing technical expertise to support policy and law enforcement work.
ChatGPT—a chatbot developed by OpenAI to give human-like answers to questions—had been used by cybercriminals to create malicious software designed to steal data, prompting a warning from Khan. There have also been reports of the AI issuing false stories and accusations. For instance, highly respected law professor Jonathan Turley had been falsely named in a research project as a sexual harasser and Brian Hood—regional mayor of Hepburn Shire in Australia—had threatened to sue OpenAI after the AI falsely named him as convicted criminal.
Google recently made news when rumours about the potential for Samsung to abandon its services in favour of Microsoft’s Bing circulated. Google’s share prices have been in decline since then. Additionally, the tech giant is being anticipated to launch its Pixel Fold and Pixel 7a in May 2023, with leaked prices arousing interest.
OpenAI is a research laboratory established by technology entrepreneur Elon Musk, Microsoft co-founder Sam Altman, and others. It focuses on designing and shipping advanced AI algorithms, technologies and products. OpenAI is committed to advancing artificial general intelligence (AGI); their aim is to create an AI system that can study any category of knowledge, understand the world and perform various tasks.
