The United States is contemplating imposing sanctions on various Chinese tech companies, including ChangXin Memory Technologies, to impede China’s progress in advanced semiconductor development. This move aims to prevent Beijing from acquiring cutting-edge AI chips that could potentially bolster its military capabilities.
According to Bloomberg News, sources familiar with the matter revealed that the US Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security is deliberating adding ChangXin to the entity list, which restricts these companies’ access to US technology. Additionally, five other Chinese firms are also under consideration for similar sanctions.
ChangXin Memory Technologies specializes in manufacturing commodity DRAM memory chips for everyday consumer products, with a primary focus on civilian and commercial applications. In response to these allegations, the company stated that it adheres to US export regulations.
Last year, the United States took action to prevent American imports to a significant SMIC plant after it supplied the chip powering Huawei’s Mate 60 Pro phone. This move resulted in the suspension of millions of dollars worth of chipmaking materials and parts shipments from at least one supplier, Entegris.
In recent months, the US has been actively working to halt shipments of more advanced AI chips to China, as part of its efforts to block Beijing from acquiring state-of-the-art US technologies that could potentially enhance its military capabilities.
