Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to reshape Africa’s security landscape, according to Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Magaji Yusuf Bichi. Speaking at a seminar organized by the National Institute for Security Studies, Bichi highlighted the underutilization of AI in addressing security challenges in Africa.
Represented by the director of administration, Mohammed Kawumi, Bichi emphasized the importance of harnessing the power of AI in effectively responding to emerging security threats. He described AI as a double-edged sword that can enable swift responses to evolving security challenges on the continent.
During the seminar, Professor Abiodun Musa Aibinu from Summit University pointed out the challenges of AI in Africa, including limited resources, vulnerability, and inadequate monitoring mechanisms. The seminar, themed Artificial Intelligence, Security, and Emerging Economies in Africa: Challenges and Prospects, brought together distinguished professionals to discuss the role of AI in providing security solutions in Africa.
The Executive Intelligence Management Course (EIMC), attended by participants from various sectors including DSS, FAAN, CBN, and the military, focused on exploring the potential of AI in enhancing security measures in the region. The seminar series aims to promote discussions on the prospects and challenges of AI as a tool for security solutions in Africa.
With the increasing importance of AI in addressing complex security issues, experts believe that a strategic approach to harnessing and managing AI technologies is essential for ensuring effective security architecture in Africa. As the continent grapples with diverse security threats, the integration of AI capabilities can play a crucial role in safeguarding national interests and promoting stability in the region.
