UNESCO and KOMINFO Debut AI Ethics Assessment Tool in Indonesia

UNESCO and the Ministry of Communications and Informatics (KOMINFO) have introduced a new AI Ethics Assessment Tool in Indonesia to evaluate the country’s readiness in the field of artificial intelligence. This initiative aims to align AI development in Indonesia with global ethical standards, particularly focusing on ethical and responsible AI deployment.

The AI Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM) is a comprehensive tool that covers various dimensions such as legal/regulatory, socio-cultural, economy, scientific and educational, and technical/infrastructural aspects. By using this tool, Indonesia can assess its preparedness to implement AI ethically and responsibly, in line with the global standards set by the 2021 Recommendation on the Ethics of AI.

The launch of the RAM tool in Indonesia also served as a platform to inform stakeholders from diverse sectors about its utility in evaluating the country’s AI policy landscape. The initiative gathered over 100 multidisciplinary AI experts who actively participated in discussions and shared their inputs, expertise, priorities, and concerns to ensure successful implementation of the RAM.

In partnership with UNESCO, Indonesia has been committed to promoting inclusive and accountable AI use since 2019. The country’s endorsement of a set of AI principles reflects its dedication to values such as human rights, diversity, inclusivity, and environmental sustainability in AI development. Through the RAM assessment, Indonesia aims to ensure strategic AI governance, interventions, and regulatory frameworks that align with UNESCO’s ethical standards and contribute to the country’s AI development.

UNESCO and KOMINFO invite all stakeholders to support and participate in the transparent and inclusive development of AI in Indonesia. The Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM) provides a structured approach to evaluate Indonesia’s AI ecosystem across various dimensions, facilitating the country’s journey towards ethical and responsible AI deployment.
