Tyneside-based lighting technology firm, Circadian Lighting Limited, trading as Circadacare, has successfully raised £1.3m in investments to expand its work in helping seniors live independently. The funds were raised through a round led by the North East Innovation Fund, supported by the European Regional Development Fund and managed by Northstar Ventures, along with contributions from angel investors. The company also received additional grants of £358,000 through Innovate UK and £80,000 from the Longitude Prize on Dementia for its technology.
Circadacare specializes in developing circadian lighting solutions that optimize natural sleep-wake cycles for care homes and dementia care facilities. The company’s latest offering, Heleos, is a remote-monitoring platform designed specifically for elderly individuals who live alone. The technology has been proven to enhance sleep quality, alertness, cognition, engagement, and reduce ‘sundowning’, thereby minimizing falls and promoting independence.
By leveraging circadian light technology and advanced artificial intelligence monitoring, Circadacare aims to support the care sector, particularly local authorities, in providing efficient and informed care to service users. With over 7.2 million individuals aged 75 and above in the UK, including 2.4 million living alone in their own homes, the need for independent living solutions is on the rise. By 2030, the number of people over 65 in the UK is projected to increase by 33%.
James Theobald, founder of Circadacare, expressed gratitude for the investors’ confidence and emphasized that the funding will help the company achieve its mission of enabling individuals to live independently for longer. Richard Charnley, investment director at Northstar Ventures, applauded the Circadacare team for providing a healthy aging solution that reduces dependence on healthcare providers and offers peace of mind to families and caregivers. Charnley expressed full support for Circadacare’s expansion, projecting continued growth and success for the company.
Circadian lighting and remote-monitoring technologies offer immense potential in improving the quality of life for seniors and enhancing the efficiency of the care sector. With the combination of cutting-edge lighting solutions and advanced AI, Circadacare is at the forefront of supporting the increasing aging population in the UK, empowering individuals to retain their independence and promoting healthier aging.
