Musk also took a jab at Larry Page, new partner of OpenAI, for not taking AI safety seriously. In response, it was reported that Elon Musk has been poaching AI researchers from Alphabet Inc’s Google in order to build his own AI system. This action also comes after a concerted effort by Musk and other AI professionals to declare a 6-month pause on developing AI technology that rivals OpenAI’s powerful GPT-4.
In an interview with Carlson, Musk made it clear the dangers of AI technology, labeling it as more dangerous than the mismanagement of aircraft, cars, and other vehicles. He fears that an AI more powerful than OpenAI’s GPT-4 could be used to manipulate public opinion, causing civilizational destruction.
It was previously discovered that Musk had already stepped down from OpenAI’s board in 2018 due to his heavy investments into Tesla and SpaceX. Along with that, he disagreed with OpenAI’s direction as they became a close source and for-profit company.
