Qualcomm has unveiled ControlNet, a new mobile AI image generation model that can work on almost any platform without requiring an online connection. In a similar vein to Adobe’s Firefly AI, ControlNet generates AI portions to enhance existing images, but with the added bonus of starting with a seed image instead of only using text prompts. Unlike its competitors, ControlNet’s ability to manipulate images happens entirely on the user’s device, without needing an internet connection. Demos have shown that ControlNet can take a sketch prompt for a kitten and turn it into a surrealist cat, or transform an office space image into a 1970s-themed space with vivid orange walls. The introduction of ControlNet has been received positively, a development many regard as a wave of the future.
