Mobile users will now get much needed relief from irritating calls and SMSes. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced regulation changes to curb spam messages and calls. All companies will have to install Artificial Intelligence (AI) filters on their messaging and call services before May 1 to provide a better experience to their customers. TRAI has directed telecom operators to block all promotional calls and messages sent to 10-digit mobile numbers. Additionally, TRAI has also enabled the caller ID feature which will display the name and photo of the caller.
Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio, two of the biggest telecom operators in India, already announced plans to introduce AI-driven filters to block spam messages and calls. They are also in talks with the Truecaller app for the implementation of caller ID feature. However, this implementation could cause privacy concerns amongst the users. To offer better 5G experience, TRAI has also ordered to improve the call services of telecom companies. In February, TRAI asked operators to confirm their message and header templates on distributed ledger technology (DLT) platform and block any unverified templates in the given timeframe.
Overall, the new regulation from TRAI is a welcome change for the mobile users as it will help to curb the irritating promotional calls and messages. It will also ensure better privacy to the user while they can also access the caller ID feature.
