Tinder Adds ID Verification to the Blue Checkmark Process
In response to the rising concerns surrounding dating scams and AI deepfakes, Tinder has introduced a new ID verification tool that is now a requirement to receive a coveted blue checkmark on the platform.
Since 2020, Tinder has been utilizing selfies and video selfies as verification methods, but the addition of ID verification adds an extra layer of security. Users who opt for ID verification will not only receive a blue camera icon badge for photo verification but also a blue ID badge icon. Those who complete both ID and photo verification will earn the highly sought-after blue checkmark, signifying full verification.
To undergo ID verification, users will be prompted to take a photo of their ID, which will then be compared to the face in their video selfie. Additionally, the birthday listed on the ID must match the one on the user’s profile to ensure accuracy. Accepted forms of ID include a valid driver’s license or passport, with variations based on individual market requirements.
A trial of this feature conducted in Australia and New Zealand last year yielded positive results, showing that users with the blue checkmark received more matches than those without verification. This suggests that individuals feel more secure when connecting with verified profiles.
The rollout of this new feature will commence in the US, UK, Brazil, and Mexico, with Brazil and the UK expected to implement it in the spring, followed by the US and Mexico in the summer. This global expansion aims to enhance user safety and build trust within the Tinder community.
By incorporating ID verification, Tinder is taking proactive steps to combat fraudulent activities on its platform and promote a safer online dating experience for users worldwide.
