The European Union has recently announced the development of its first set of rules that would regulate global artificial intelligence (AI) applications such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT. This has caused much concern in the industry, prompting OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman to state that he may be forced to shutter the company’s operations in Europe due to the overreaching regulations.
Altman believes that the EU could remedy the situation by reconsidering their definition of general-purpose AI systems. Despite his appeals, the EU AI Act was not withdrawn. OpenAI’s ChatGPT app was eventually banned in Italy due to worries over data privacy and youth safety. Following an online meeting between OpenAI and the Italian Data Protection Agency, the ChatGPT app became available to Italians again on April 28th.
