In about five years, toys could incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) technology, like ChatGPT, that would give personalized bedtime stories to children, or even teach them important values like honesty, according to a report in the Financial Times. VTech, the Hong Kong-based electronics company typically known for its educational devices, is among the firms that observe the potential application of AI in toys very closely. The Director, Allan Wong, the Director of VTech stated that while the technology is not yet advanced enough and the chips needed are still too expensive, chip integration into toys will happen.
Wong gave an example of how a teddy bear stuffed with generative AI could interact with children by remembering their name and the activities they did during the day. The bear would then tell a bedtime story crafted around the information it gathered, making the story more personal. Wong said that such toys could also teach kids important values. However, he did acknowledge that there were a few scary possibilities and issues surrounding privacy and security.
The report is indicative of the hype and expectations surrounding generative AI technology like ChatGPT. AI-generated texts are so human-like that many are proclaiming it to be a revolution. While the technology advances, developers are fearful of the harm it may bring, going as far as saying that AI could cause the extinction of humanity. Others claim that the prevalence of ChatGPT could displace workers, while critics of the technology warn against disinformation and the potential for exploitation.
The mainstreaming of AI in toys is the latest example of how the technology is being widely adopted in many products. The day when children’s toys will be interactive, personalized, and impart values, may soon be upon us. However, it is crucial to be cautious about the potential risks that such technology may bring. Although the possibilities of generative AI are endless, it is necessary to tread carefully.
