This research conducted by a team of scientists at Northwestern Memorial Hospital monitored 585 patients who were admitted to the ICU suffering severe pneumonia and respiratory failure, including 190 covid-19 patients. The new machine learning approach, CarpeDiem, was used to identify the cause of death among these seriously ill patients--and it revealed that secondary bacterial pneumonia is the main killer. Led by Dr. Catherine Gao MD, this research also shows how machine learning and artificial intelligence could be used to treat COVID-19. Northwestern University, a leader in higher education, confirmed the findings.
