Discover how the University College London (UCL) is revolutionising plastic waste with their innovative use of machine learning to sort compostable and biodegradable plastics from conventional plastics. Led by Professor Mark Miodownik, the team used a range of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) pixel-by-pixel chemical descriptions of the samples to create an AI model that can accurately identify PLA, PP and PET pieces- regardless of their size- reducing plastic contamination and increasing the value of recyclable products.
