A recent study involving over 25,000 accounting exam questions has shown that students outperform OpenAI's ChatGPT. Despite this, the impressive performance of the AI-based product gives promise for a game-changing education and learning experience. With a focus on true/false, multiple choice, and even human language explanation, ChatGPT could be an invaluable asset to the world of teaching.

Researchers from 186 universities, including Brigham Young University (BYU), tested OpenAI's ChatGPT on accounting exams, finding that university students significantly outperformed it. Despite this, it is seen as a game-changer, providing a way to teach and learn accounting more efficiently in the future. ChatGPT did best on true/false and multiple choice questions, but struggled with higher order problems and short answers. While it generated convincing references, many of the works and authors were fictional. David Wood, professor of accounting from BYU, led the study, with the aim of discussing this technology from multiple perspectives.
