RedPajama is a collaborative project between Together, Ontocord.ai, ETH DS3Lab, Stanford CRFM, Hazy Research, and MILA Québec AI Institute to create freely licensable open-source large models. The data and scripts are based off the LLaMA recipe, allowing organisations to freely use it to pre-train models and push the boundaries of AI. This project originates from the need for open access to large language models from organisations of any size. It seeks to provide ethical and commercially viable models with openly available data. With their combined experience of open source research, Chris Re and Vipul Ved Prakash lead this project.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Concludes AI Models are Not Dependent on Size

. OpenAI, founded by tech leaders Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and others, is committed to reducing the amount of human labor and increasing the use of AI-driven production. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, suggested at an MIT event that AI developers need to figure out ways other than increasing the size of their models to make them better. Its popular ChatGPT model comes from GPT-4, one of the most advanced large language models developed. This provoked a 100-person open letter that asked for a pause in the development of AI systems. Altman agreed to establish safety guardrails, but noted that some concerns were exaggerated.
