OpenAI’s ChatGPT Sees Surge in Usage for Work-Related Tasks
OpenAI’s ChatGPT continues to gain popularity, with a recent survey by the Pew Research Center revealing that 23% of U.S. adults have used the chatbot in some capacity, up from 18% seven months earlier. The data also highlights a significant increase in the number of Americans utilizing ChatGPT for work-related activities, with 20% of respondents using the platform for tasks at their jobs as of February 2024, compared to just 8% in March 2023.
Age and education levels appear to influence the use of ChatGPT for work, with nearly one-third of employed individuals under 30 having used the chatbot for work purposes. This percentage decreases to 21% for individuals aged 30 to 49 and drops to 10% for those aged 50 and above. Moreover, adults with graduate or bachelor’s degrees are the most frequent users of ChatGPT for work, at 33% and 25%, respectively.
While the adoption of ChatGPT for work tasks is on the rise, skepticism remains regarding the chatbot’s reliability for political information, particularly in the context of the upcoming 2024 U.S. presidential election. The Pew survey found that both Republicans and Democrats expressed a lack of trust in ChatGPT’s election-related information, with approximately 40% of respondents from each political group indicating little or no confidence in the chatbot on this topic.
Despite the increasing number of users, a significant portion of Americans (34%) have not heard of ChatGPT, underscoring the ongoing opportunity for outreach and education about the platform within the broader population. As ChatGPT’s user base continues to expand, addressing concerns about trust and enhancing awareness of its capabilities will be essential for further growth and adoption in diverse settings.
