Sunway City Iskandar Puteri has finalized a significant land deal worth over US$80.5 million with Equalbase Pte Ltd for the development of a data center. This move is part of Sunway Group’s strategy to maximize growth potential in Iskandar Malaysia, Johor, with SCIP expected to reach an estimated gross development value (GDV) of US$6.3 billion and accommodate 250,000 residents upon completion.
Gerard Soosay, SCIP’s CEO, highlighted the strategic location of SCIP only five kilometers from the second link, offering proximity to Singapore and attracting investor confidence in Johor. The disposal is seen as a step towards unlocking the value of Sunway’s initial investment in SCIP.
Equalbase’s executive chairman, Christian Bischoff, expressed confidence in the sustainable development of the data center, emphasizing the integration of essential elements such as clean energy production, battery storage systems, and innovative water solutions within the project.
The growing interest in Johor as a strategic location in the Asia Pacific region has seen major global players like Microsoft, Nvidia, and Amazon investing in data centers to power various technological capabilities. Sunway’s proposed data center development is expected to further boost Johor’s economic growth and enhance SCIP’s ecosystem, making the city more appealing to high-income professionals and global corporations seeking to establish regional headquarters.
With SCIP’s diverse offerings, including retail malls, leisure facilities, hotels, commercial offices, and educational institutions, the township aims to create a sustainable and integrated city environment. The upcoming Rapid Transit System Link, scheduled to commence operations by 2026, will enhance connectivity between Singapore and Iskandar Malaysia, while the proposed Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone aims to accelerate economic growth in the region and elevate Johor to a developed state in Malaysia by 2030.
